Moving to Spokane

Updated: Mar 22, 2022

After living in Seattle for the past five years, it became apparent to me that I needed a change. At first, I was hoping to move to California, since I have family there, but with the cost of living, I wanted something more affordable. My partner and I settled on Spokane due to its close proximity to my family and old friends and affordable housing (compared to Seattle). At first, when my partner Ezrah brought up the idea, I gagged. I hated the idea of moving back to the area I grew up (two hours away), but soon I realized, two hours makes a big difference. I would have new activities and restaurants to explore just like when I moved to Seattle. Also, Ezrah told convinced me we could probably rent a house, and now I have my own art studio, although it remains lacking in furniture three weeks in to our new spot. I haven't received my first paycheck yet!

That brings me to my new job. Due to the nature of my job, I won't say exactly where I work, but it is a mental healthcare facility. So far I am thoroughly enjoying it, and for being fresh out of college, it feels so good to be respected at work that I don't even mind the mediocre pay. As much as I love art with all my heart, I also love mental health. Through studying sociology in college, I became acquainted with a new fascination with the brain and the field of mental health. Therapy has changed my life for the better and made me realize my traumas and my flaws and find healthy coping mechanisms. Through college I was a horrible student, but since finishing group therapy last spring, I have completely transformed my academic career, finishing with A's and B's in my classes. Grades I rarely received in the past. I have learned to nurture the people who were helping me in life and how to let go of those who brought out the worst in my character. I am hoping that in the next coming months, this career path humbles me even more and I learn how to effectively help and speak to those around me with empathy and compassion.
