The past few weeks have brought significant changes into my life. Two weeks ago, I moved out of my old house and into my friend Carmen’s place. Now, I find myself with two host sisters, Carmen and Paola, and my host parents Margarita and Manuel. Leaving my previous home was prompted by an incident that, while not traumatic, was enough to finally push me to make the change I had been longing for. The constant malnourishment I had been experiencing had left me anemic, and waking up dizzy every morning had become tiresome.
I am absolutely loving my new family, my cozy bedroom, and our beautiful house. Everything feels right. The family is so caring, and Margarita, my new host mom, cooks the most delicious food I’ve had in Junin. I feel like I have finally found a place to call home.
I returned back to Apata this past Sunday
after spending a week in Ancash for Peace Corps training. During our time there, we shadowed house visits conducted entirely in Quechua, the indigenous language. Witnessing these conversations was awe-inspiring. Community agents visit mothers to ensure child welfare and provide guidance on healthy eating for their children. As volunteers, our role involves supporting these visits and ensuring they are conducted effectively, although sometimes I find myself unsure of exactly what my responsibilities entail.
On Monday, a group of us embarked on a hike to Laguna 69. Despite the cloudy weather, the experience was magical. The glaciers appeared like looming ghosts through the fog, and the lakes shimmered with a pure turquoise hue. We even dared to jump into the freezing cold water, which turned out to be invigorating. My appreciation for Peru's natural beauty deepened during my time in Ancash, and I felt immensely grateful for this experience. It has ignited a desire within me to explore more of the world and perhaps never return home. I find myself pondering where life will take me next after this adventure concludes—whether I will settle back in the US and create a conventional life or continue pursuing my wanderlust.
